756

The hardest thing to do in professional sports is to hit a pitched baseball. Regardless of what you think of him, 756 is an unbelievable accomplishment.

Remember "if it does not fit, you must acquit"? I'd like to introduce "in order to compete, he had to cheat".

Let's not get all high and mighty, he's not the only one. I'm willing to bet half the pitchers he faced were using too. I'm not excusing what he did. I'm just saying the playing field was a lot more level than people will admit.

I think the main issue with Bonds is that he's a jerk, not that he used. That's why people didn't want him to break the record.

I watched some of the sports talk shows on Sunday, and there was a healthy debate about whether Bonds should be in Cooperstown. The consensus appeared to be that as "nothing has been proven" he has to go in.

It made me wonder about Mark McGwire. There are very clear allegations made about Bonds in Game of Shadows, as well as his trainer being in jail. Nothing even close to that is on record about McGwire, other than his congressional testimony. But, there seems to be consensus that McGwire won't get in.

Why is that?

Because all McGwire ever did was hit home runs. Even without the 'roids allegations I have always maintained he was the most overrated baseball player in the history of the game. He was barely a .275 hitter, hit very few doubles for a guy with his power and was a terrible first basemen. He hit homers at a high rate but that's all he did.

Bonds on the other hand was considered one of the best players in the game before he went on the stuff a few years ago. He had already won multiple MVP awards, was a .330 hitter with power and stolen bases guy and along with Rickey Henderson is the best defensive left fielder in the history of the baseball. His credentials were strong before his late career explosion.

Almost forgot - my "high and mighty" comment wasn't directed at you Hammer, it was directed at the overall feeling and media folk in particluar who happily buried their head in the sand years back when it first became obvious guys were using.

I also think McGwire's pathetic display infront of Congress has ruined any credibility he had.
