Covering A Lot Of Ground.

Things have been a bit more hectic at work recently than they usually are this time of year so this site has been in a pretty sorry state of neglect. I should be able to get back to normal in the next few days though. And by the way, if you are not hoping Greg Norman wins the British Open this weekend you don't deserve to be watching it.

Here's a bunch of things that have built up the past few weeks.

- I love the Brewers and Cubs getting CC Sabathia and Rich Harden respectively. These are the only two good teams in the NL and they know they will be facing each other in the NLCS. I think the Cubs are better but the Brewers are not far off, and a hell of a lot of fun to watch I might add. Their lineup is stacked.

- Barry Bonds is never playing in the Major Leagues again. Ever. Stop listening to the rumours. The only place it makes sense for him to play is for the Yankees, because their clubhouse is a media circus already, and they don't even want him. They just went with Richie Sexson over Barry for God's sake.

- Although I think Detroit is going to make a run and win their division I no longer think they are going to win the World Series. It's going to be tough for them to have enough left to beat two of Anaheim, Boston or Tampa (yep Tampa takes the Wild Card). I think the Red Sox are going to beat the Cubs in the most crazy popular World Series ever.

- So David Stern, in the last few years you have lost teams in Vancouver and Seattle, two of the 10 most entertaining, vibrant, sophisticated and best cities in North America for Memphis and Oklahoma City, 2 of the worst cities in North America. I'll repeat that. Vancouver and Seattle for Memphis and Oklahoma City. That is shameful.

- I think the Clippers have a right to be furious at Elton Brand, or more accurately David Falk. I think Baron Davis would have ended up in LA anyway, but they fully expected to sign Brand. Falk really stuck it to them.

So would you trade Brand-Maggette for Camby-Davis which is essentially what happened? I would. Davis is gong to play very well for the Clips and Maggette is the type of guy who is always going to have great numbers on bad teams (he's going to average at least 26 next year for Don Nelson). The Clippers still won't make the playoffs but they're a bit better.

- Big surprise Ray Emery is headed to Russia. On January 3 I wrote he was headed to the Swedish Elite league. My geography was a bit off but the idea was right.

- Michael Beasley is going to have a much better NBA career than 1st pick Derrick Rose. It tells you something when point guard is the real must have position in the league these days and the Bulls GM did not get one serious trade offer for the 1st pick. Rose will be a good pro but Beasley will be a perennial all star.

- Thank God Billy Packer is done with CBS and the Final Four. He knows the game better than anyone but he is just a miserable son of a bitch who took all the fun out of the games in the past few years. Clark Kellogg will be great but Bill Raftery would have been absolutely perfect.

I recently read the book "Field of Schemes" about the massive shell game that is sports stadium politics these days. Basically what happens is that the both the taxpayer and the regular Joe sports fan gets fleeced due to the complicity of grandstanding local politicians in transferring dollars from the masses into the pockets of opportunistic owners who really don't deliver the advertised economic benefits.
