This and That.

- The money the Arizona Diamondbacks gave Randy Johnson is insane. 2 years and $26 million for a 43 year old with a bad back? I still think he can win 15 games in the horrible National League but he's also just as likely to destroy his back in his first start.

- Don't blame the Cowboys loss on Saturday all on Tony Romo. The 'Boys played like shit the whole game and were lucky to have a shot to win. T.O. dropped a few more passes, Parcells looked like the game has passed him by and their defense was awful. I don't see how Parcells comes back to coach next year.

- A belated congrats to the Gold medal winning Canadian junior hockey team. And a special congratulations to TSN for making this tournament an event. Nobody, and I mean absolutely nobody outside of Canada gives a rat's ass about this tournament.

- I'm glad to see Tiki Barber is as smart as he looks and seems. Running back is the most physically punishing position in pro sports and his decision to retire at 31 means he won't be walking with a cane at 50. He'll also have one hell of a post football TV career.

- Is there a Manning family curse about looking awful in big games? Or just a complete lack of guts? They were both awful again this weekend and I think Peyton and the Colts are going to get killed this weekend against the Ravens.

- Though I respect Tiger more than any other golfer, I think my favorite is Vijay. It's pretty amazing what he has done in the back half of his career and he has a "screw you" attitude as well. After winning the Mercedes this past weekend I expect a big year from him.

- It's baseball Hall of Fame announcement day. Would you vote Mark McGwire in? I would. Sure he was juiced but so was everyone else at the time. Who's to say what kind of competitive advantage he had. And the stodgy old writers who won't vote him in are the same hypocrites who vote in 'roids users into the football Hall of Fame.

Agreed - if only Emmitt Smith had the wisdom of Tiki and Barry Sanders. At least Romo isn't still the back-up. If Bledsoe were still the starter, Romo would have no chance to make amends.

Giving Randy Johnson that kind of cash is the dumbest move by a GM this off-season. On the bright side at least he sells tickets and he'll probably win 10 games (before he goes on the 60 day DL) feasting on the pathetic hitting in the NL West.

In the case of the Manning brothers it's unquestionably GUTS!. Eli has none and Peyton has only slightly more. First of all Eli should have been about a 4th round pick but that's a whole other story. They both look like they lost their puppy after something doesn't go their way. Real inspiring to the other 52 guys your leading. Fortunately we'll be done talking about Peyton for another year after this Sunday.

Why is it that Diamond Joe Quimby's prose reminds me of a guy from Carleton poli sci I knew a few years back?

I've said all along if Eli's last name wasn't Manning he would have been a fifth round pick carrying a clipboard in Arizona or San Fran.

Bang on Hammer.
